drawing of Pythia, sitting on the tripod, giving an oracle

The Pythia, sitting on the tripod, gives an oracle to the mythical king of Athens Aegeus. This depiction is the only known contemporary representation of the priestess. Note her calm demeanor, no raging and tossing about as she was depicted in many earlier writings. An inscription on the object names her Themis. Greek vessel dated ca. 440-430 BCE. Berlin Museum. For colored photograph, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythia.
