matrix — the womb; the origin of anything, that which gives form
matrilineal — descent, inheritance, belonging based on the female line/ancestors
matrilocal — kinship/social system where a woman's daughters and their families live in or near her household, and where her adult sons move to and live in or near the households of their wives' mothers
matrifocal/matricentric — domestic/cultural form in which women, because of their roles as progenitors, nurturers and protectors of the people, take leading roles in decision-making, either in concert with men or as the ultimate decision-makers; women and their dependents are central to family/clan/community; adult males (sons, nephews, brothers, fathers, husbands) may be present or absent
matriarchal — social system where a mother is head of a family, clan, community, and/or where women govern society; adult males may be present or absent
